Mariapfarr - a site of pilgrimage
Culture vacation in the SalzburgerLand
All the way in the year 923, documents attest to the existence of a church in Mariapfarr, the mother church of the Lungau region.
Over the centuries, the church was expanded in a variety of architectural styles. You can still see evidence of the various style époques to this day, such as its Romanesque frescoes.
Silent night museum in Mariapfarr
From 1815 to 1817, Josef Mohr served as an assistant priest in Mariapfarr, during which time he wrote the text for his world-famous Christmas song, "Silent Night! Holy Night!".
In the historic rooms of the old rectory, you will find the Mariapfarr Parish & Pilgrimage Museum which houses valuable exhibits, documentation relating to Josef Mohr, as well as a Nativity Scene with figures from the 18th century.
